Well known for being the first country to adopt Christianity as an official religion around 1,700 years ago, Armenia has a rich history dating back 3,000 years. The country’s multicultural past includes being part of the Byzantine, Ottoman and Iranian Empires, plus a decades-long stint as a Soviet Republic. Because of this, Armenia has a lot of both European and Middle Eastern cultures. Now, Armenia is a modern nation with a lot of respect for its great and ancient past, particularly in Yerevan, the country’s capital and most important city, as well as Echmiadzin.
